A few months ago, Manycomic website published an article titled “Manga Bl Webtoon Can Be a Substitute for Yaoi Manga?” (Webtoons Movingtoon Are Poised to Become The Future of Japan Anime).
Webtoon Comics even made a video titled, “THE BIG BACKGROUND The Manga Industry With Webtoon’s Abundance!”
Despite all its different views, the Japanese manga industry will remain firmly on the throne and the Korean webtoon will not have as much influence on anime as manga. Why is that?
Let’s find out the source of the problem below.
It all started when two webtoons were adapted into anime (thanks to Netflix) and quickly “caused trending” because only Japanese manga and light novels were originally adapted into anime – Tower of God and God of High. School. This makes many people think that Korean webtoon will quickly “take over” the anime manga world.
Why isn’t webtoon “the future of the comic industry”?
1. The presence of webtoon and manga
Korean Webtoon started to become famous globally in 2015 with completely new style works such as True Beauty, My Stepmom, Painter of the Night … the search volume has been increasing over the past 5 years.
Photo 2 shows the popularity of the keywords “webtoon” (green) and “Manga” (red) globally. The webtoon’s numbers are so small that it is unlikely to be 10% of the manga.
In Japan alone (photo 3), the popularity of webtoon is almost negligible compared to the manga.
2. The Japanese are still conservative as usual
The Japanese are inherently very culturally sensitive. They love the identity of their own people and are extremely strict when accepting any foreign culture. Even they are not interested in promoting anime outside of Japan and only focus on the domestic market. So Yaoi Manga still cannot be replaced easily because Boys Love (Bl) Webtoon and cases like Tower of God or God of High School are extremely “lucky” webtoon series.
3. “Free” model of webtoon
“Free” is a double-edged sword for webtoon. Each webtoon is usually only officially posted in two places: the author’s personal blog and webtoon publishing site (Line WEBTOON, Lezhin, Toomics, Manycomic, Manytoon …). Authors will only receive profits when they reach a certain number of reads (50,000 times) and from advertising. How many webtoon sets get that much viewership? How many series really get the attention of the anime scene, when they have a lot of manga projects ahead of them?
Webtoon stories depend on the Internet, thus filling the digital gap of manga, but cannot compete in other positions such as print or spin-off.
4. Fans are too familiar with Japanese free manga, hentai, anime, doujinshi.To dominate the read manga online for free market, webtoon must have more and better works than manga, or have to be groundbreaking to the point of revolution, as Amazon Kindle has shifted the book market from printed books to online cheaper and more convenient, resulting in many printed book publishers going bankrupt.
But the webtoon is also just a supplement to the comic industry that has been shrouded in the shadow of Japanese manga and American comic books. The form and manner of the webtoon is new, but not strong enough.
Webtoon is great, but can not be mistaken Webtoon still has its own beauty, unique features, can not deny the truth. But it is not flattering that the webtoon will “threaten” manga or replace manga in the anime market.
