In past years, Apple has become a more vigilant company. Maybe even a more boring one. It’s evolved from producing world-changing tech products to selling cloud-based services facilities that are used over more than billion Apple devices around the world. Things That Apple Got Right
In 2019, Apple proved masterful at staying out of the way of powerful external forces such as the tech war and the trade war. Serious self-inflicted wounds similar to the “Antennagate” and Apple Maps version 1 of yesteryear were minimal. So writing about what the company got right and wrong is mostly an exercise in calling gout areas where it performed beyond expectations, both in its production and its system transits, and where it didn’t go almost far enough when it could have. Here is what Apple got right and wrong in 2019.
GOOD: Apple’s Return as Camera Pioneer
For most of us, the camera is the most important feature of a smartphone. Most of the apps that we use, especially social ones, already rely heavily on the camera, and apps will continue using the camera in more creative and important ways. So it’s important that Apple keeps delivering the cutting edge in camera tech.
However, during 2018, Apple’s phone line, which consisted of XR, XS, and XS Max, seemed to lag behind the camera systems on other flagship devices from companies like Samsung and Google. The XS Max and XS still had the dual rear camera setup that came with the iPhone 7, which has 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 2X optical zoom. Apple wasn’t the first on with the three-camera system. Huawei launched the first triple camera in Mate 20 Pro in 2018, and Samsung and others added three-camera systems in 2019. Apple’s limits are in the integration of the software with the camera hardware, and in how the three cameras on the back of the iPhone work collectively.
Bad: Siri and HomPod have become Dull
As compared to other virtual assistants Apple’s Siri doesn’t seem to be advancing at a comparable pace. However, Apple did get a headstart by launching Siri way back in 2011. Above all, new AI manager John Giannandrea has already worked at Google for more than a year. But still, Siri didn’t play big in presentation, and even Apple didn’t mention any improvements to its assistance.
Siri’s capabilities in Apple’s HomPod seemed apparent, which was supposed to compete Echo and Alexa. However, HomPod now sells at $349 that has not competed well in the market as compared to low price smart speakers. HomePod has made only incremental improvements since its launch in 2018, things like the ability to recognize more than one user and the ability to get in sync with Mac-based time tracking apps and able to notify deadlines and tasks.
Good: Giving Up Little Things For Battery Life
People that have been using iPhone 11 Pro Max for months are still struck by how long the battery lasts. The iPhone 11 Pro Max battery serves more than 12 hours, vs. about 10 hours for the iPhone XS Max. The barret life improvement stems in part of improvements in the power efficiency of the system on a chip inside the Pro max. But it is also because of the larger battery in Pro Max as compare to XS Max and there is more room for a larger battery because the new phone is slightly thicker than 2018 phones. As he departed from Apple, Johny Ive was surely dismayed at the thicker device. But increasing battery life was one of the most crowd-pleasing improvements Apple could have made to its newest phones.
Bad: The Airpower Failure
Apple’s AirPower charging dock meant to charge three iDevices at once, such as iWatch, iPhone and Airpods. Apple announced the gadget in September 2017 alongside iPhone X and iPhone 8, both of them allowed wireless charging and said the charging mat would be launched in the same year. Things That Apple Got Right. Then 2018 passed with no AirPower. The report said the device faced an overheating problem, charging accuracy and activation issues. Then in March of 2019, Apple canceled the product and said that they can not build something that met their own standards. Though this was a little surprising after Apple managed to bring AirPods to the market, which appeared to be a much harder wireless problem.
Good: Dealing with Qualcomm
In April, Apple and processor creator Qualcomm reached a surprising statement after what seemed like endless wrangling over the number of royalties Apple paid to license Qualcomm’s patented technologies. The contract cost of Apple was as much as $4.7 billion, but the two companies are once again playing nice together. The deal allowed Apple and Qualcomm to enter a six-year patent license agreement as well as a multilayer chipset supply agreement. It was a good deal for Qualcomm’s modem revenue, but it was also a better deal for apple, which is under pressure to have 5G modem chip its 2020 iPhone.
Apple tried to help Intel in building modem chip, but Intel ended up miss developing the milestone, and Intel’s leadership is said to have lost interest in modem chip as a business. Shortly after making peace with Qualcomm, Apple bought Intel’s 5G modem line. This may also be a smart move because it gives Apple intellectual property and for people, it will need to design its own modem chip later on.
All in all, we would say that Apple’s smart movies outweighed its dumb one in 2019 and the wisdom of some of its 2019 moves, Tim Cook’s chumminess with the Trump, is yet to be determined.
