How To Become A Life Coach
Gone are the days where anyone could add a life coach title to their name. Now, it’s vital to be a certified practitioner to have the appropriate training and understanding needed.
Life Coach Training Programs
Depending on which program you choose, getting a life coach certification can cost up to $12,000 and 6-12 months of training. The number one certification standard is the International Coach Federation (IFC). These credentials let clients know you’ve established specific career qualifications, training, and coaching experience.
See some examples of life coach training programs, below!
Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP)
This is the most comprehensive course program that covers all ICF’s Core Competencies. It includes a mentor coaching portion, practical appliance through observed coaching sessions, and the Coach Knowledge Assessment to ensure that students have a thorough understanding and command of coaching principles.
Approved Coach Specific Training Hours (ACSTH)
Looking to specialize in certain focus areas? This might be the program for you. While you will learn most of the ACTP’s programs, you will also need 10 hours of mentor coaching and a performance evaluation.
As long as you complete the minimum requirement for 60 hours, along with those special requirements, you can apply for certification.
Continuing Coach Education (CCE)
Once you become a coach, you will need to continue your education to best support your clients. This is meant to help renew credentials, build new skills, and is a requirement every three years.
Life Coach Certifications
Getting a life coach certification requires you to meet minimum requirements for different coaching certificates. The three credentials offered by ICF are as follows:
- Associate Certified Coach (ACC): 60hrs of training, 100 hrs of coaching
- Professional Certified Coach (PCC): 125hrs of training, 500hrs of coaching
- Master Certified Coach (MCC): 200hrs of training, 2500hrs of coaching

Life Coach Jobs
It’s important not to confuse a life coach with a counselor or therapist. A life coach usually works short-term with a client in a very supportive and goal-oriented manner. While you could have a therapist for your whole life, life coach services range from 6-12 months, depending on each individual’s needs.
Thankfully there are so many different areas you can focus on, from health and fitness coaching, relationships, conflict management, and so much more. Find your niche and establish your business.
Once you create your business model, you will begin to build a brand and a following. Do some research and ask your mentors for crafting your coaching package prices and what your business grow.
